For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a mom of boys (MOB). In fact, all throughout college, I told everyone I wanted four boys. Although I now think two boys is plenty, being a MOB has been everything I thought it would be. They are bundles of energy, entertainment and wonder. Most days, I can’t even dream up what they’re going to get into next.
However, for those days when they’re pushing me to the brink, I thought I’d make a list of some of my favorite things I love about being a mom of boys:
- Getting cool nicknames like Captain Mama
- Building castles and forts
- Being picked to play the princess
- Having front-row seats to non-stop curiosity and adventure
- Low-maintenance hair combing
- Not having to worry about them sitting on public restroom toilets
- Making use of the word gross several times a week as they sit on public restroom floors bare bottom, show me mouthfuls of spit bubbles, play farting games, let the dog lick their toothbrush before putting it in their mouths, and so much more
- The opportunity to raise up strong, courteous, smart, God-fearing men
- Constantly exercising my brain trying to figure out why they can’t sit still for more than five minutes
- Finding the term “inside voice” laughable
- The way that jeans and shoes don’t stand a chance with them
You have to admit, that all sounds pretty wonderful, doesn’t it? Any other boy moms feeling me on this? I’d love to hear your favorites. (Don’t worry girl moms, I’ll show y’all some love next week, too.)
Aside from all the good times, I’m constantly reminding myself to not take my role as a mom of boys lightly. We’re raising future leaders, husbands, dads, teachers, etc. Here are some of my go-to resources are:
- Websites: The MOB Society, Mocha MOB
- Books: Bringing Up Boys, 21 Days of Prayer for Sons and Warrior Prayers: Praying the Word for Boys
- Radio: Mocho MOB on DFWiRadio.com, Mondays at 11 am

I would have to say boys are much easier to raise than girls. I guess girls are made to have attitudes. My son is an excellent house keeper. Dresser drawers in order, vehicle is always clean inside and out and always neat in dress from head to toe (from casual to dress). WOW, that sounds like his mom. I guess you can say mothers and daughters are too much alike in a lot of ways. I’m glad those days have passed for me. Now I find myself defending my grandchildren when mommie gets upset with them. Payback time!!!!!
Isn’t it funny how kids pick up your habits? I’m convinced that the problem with moms and daughters starts with the hair combing. Me and the baby girl get along well until it comes time for me to comb her hair.
Aw nuts….acronyms. Does that mean I’m a DOG (Dad of Girls)? 3 in our home, and we’re fundraising to bring our 4th home from Africa. I’m way out-numbered, but it’s a great thing. Whenever we have our friends with boys over, I see how different boys can be, for sure….God bless you MOB’s. :)

Ha! Yeah DOG just doesn’t have to same ring to it. Maybe D.O.D. (dad of daughters)? though that kind of sounds like a rap name.
Oh, I love being a MOB!!!

After a rough morning with my little boy, this is just the post I needed. When I was younger, I always said that I wanted girls. Now that I have only 1 child who happens to be a boy, I can’t imagine my life with out boys.
My favorite thing is watching him build, build and build. He builds train track layouts, Hot Wheels track layouts and anything that has to do with construction. Just like his daddy.
Glad you liked the post. Our boys can be a challenge at times, can’t they? We do a lot of train building here too. It’s actually one of my favorite activities as well.
